That was my intention! You're welcome and good luck !
here in Mexico Taxodium macronatum is keeped in water and they grow faster so you can try it for whole summer to avoid sorprice
Thank you! I've got this advice a few months ago from a US experienced grower of Taxodium and I have all my trees in standing water. Indeed they are growing like crazy! Cheers!
I’m curious what time of year did you graft?
Early January, but I have great success as well at the end of August. So, 2 grafting sessions per year.
@@ArkefthosBonsai Thank you so much. Very interesting… the winter and summer dormant times. Hmm.. Thanks again!
@XoshBitt yes it is. And up until this winter, I had better success rate in August. It's a great time if you can manage low temperatures in the grafting chamber. It just takes too long to see the new growth in next spring. Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsai Very interesting indeed.. thanks so much!!
Great to see how you approached the three tanuki! Your skill and patience are brilliant!👌Loved the deadwood shapes!
Thank you John! I was lucky enough to find these in my hikes and since I can't get my hands onto some old Chinese junipers, these will have to do for now. Cheers!
Great patience and wonderful outcome, my friend!👌
Trying something new here. Thank you John!
That starting scenery was spectacular! I also loved how you transformed the tree, with root pruning and wiring! I will take more notice of that species' potential when I am next in a garden centre! Thank you, my friend! 😁👌
Thank you John! I have a belief that if this cultivar of the species was known and available to the Japanese back 200 or 300 years ago, it would be one of the most popular and celebrated species for bonsai. Plus we would have a so much detailed guide for styling and caring. Anyway, have a great weekend!
Greetings from Brazil! Nice work!! What is the substrate? Pumice?
Thank you mate! It's 50% zeolite, 50% pumice for this tree. For trees dug out of the ground is 100% pumice, but this is a big tree, in a big pot, so if it's going to stay in the pot without repotting for more than 2 years, old add the zeolite that has excellent CEC to hold and slowly release fertilizer after the first season. Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsaigreat! Thank you for your answer! I really apreciate your trees❤
@DactarVda thank you!
Lovely to see your technique in play for bending such material! Thank you for sharing! By the way, the music and mountains were superb!👌
Younger material would make better, more interesting twists, but that is what I had at the time. Now the stock is bigger and more hopeful! Thank you John! Bach and mountains are a nice combination!
Amazing video! 🇨🇦🙏
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Wow! The root chops were major to fit it into the bonsai pot, and the amount of extension growth looked great too! How is the tree faring now, my friend!👌
Yes they were! The tree is fine, not the strongest growth this year though. So it's up for a march repotting, probably to a bigger pot. Still haven't pruned back the branches as I'm not to the thickness point I'm aiming for. Cheers John!
@@ArkefthosBonsai - great news! I look forward to seeing that video! Are you by planning on doing any carving on the large roots where you cut them?
@JohnThurlbeck yes, exactly! When I have a good root system established, I'm going to be carving the dead parts, or root graft above them. I'll decide in March during the repot.
@@ArkefthosBonsai - OK! Root grafting is something I can’t remember seeing so far on any UA-cam stuff. So, that would be excellent, though I’m also a big fan of carving, and like Graham Potter’s work for that. Have a brilliant week ahead! 😁👍

In quale mese hai iniziato queste operazioni di rinvaso?
For alpine pine species, I prefer sooner, in January or early February, as far as I can from summer heatwaves. Another good season for sensitive alpine species is September. Very good results. Cheers!
Fantastic! What a fabulous tree! That looked a challenge to work on in situ, especially in making the foliage pads! So thanks very much for sharing this video! It makes my largest tree look so tiny! 🤣👌
That is a very special tree to me, John, so it means a lot that you like it! Thank you!
@@ArkefthosBonsai - you are most welcome, my friend! 👍
Love how elegant this first design/styling is Fotis. On the smaller trunk I noticed at the apex there were what seemed to be 3 or 4 branches originating from a single point, is this something you consider or address only at a later stage or no?
So how long the graft will be taken? I am still beginner
This kind of graft, veneer graft, takes about a month, in a controlled environment, a high humidity chamber with artificial light and daily misting. But needs one more to stay in before slowly being introduced to outside conditions and complete shade for the summer. Some grafts might be able to get an hour of sunlight by June and full sun from late September, but not all. It's a process that requires a learning curve. Not the easiest task. Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsai I just started graft mine 10 days ago and 2 hours morning sun, I cover with plastic bag and see some moisture inside, may I ask is it good with that moisture sighn? Some people said is good and some said it’s normal reaction with that moisture
@locpham-ie6ly moisture inside is good. But 2 hours of morning sun is bad. Even minutes of direct sunlight will fry the graft way before it gets to fuse. Now is really the worst time to graft in the northern hemisphere. It is way to hot. For grafting you need very low temperatures. Lower than 20C. Now, even in full shade, is too hot. I'm afraid they will fail. You should try again in September, or when your day temperatures doesn't go higher than 20C. Good luck!
@@ArkefthosBonsai I live in southern California in the US the temperature is 32 C and I graft on black pine
@locpham-ie6ly I'm sorry, the grafts will fail. When the sun hits the bag, the temperatures inside rise to insane levels. No conifer graft can survive this. At least put the tree in full shade. No direct sunlight. Still chances are bad this time of year. But if you succeed let me know. It will be a beautiful miracle! But try again in mid to late September or even October, when temperatures are lower.
That was a fascinating look at how you grow your trees on, and I loved the change in the shape of that final tree. Very well done, my friend!👌
Thank you John! This tree looks kinda unconventional but I love it! Cheers!
I enjoyed seeing how you tried to visualize the future tree, which I imagine is hard given the bridge between the two trunks. That said, I look forward to seeing the future development of what will be a great-looking tree! 👌
Yes it is kinda hard, I have some old Japanese bonsai in mind as references, but still this is one of my favorites! Thank you John!
I loved the opening snow-bound shots, and watching your technique on this repot. I wondered if you've left the almost horizontal trunk as a sacrificial-type branch to grow the nebari? 😀
Thank you John! No, not at all. I really liked that weird branch and kept it as a statement. I liked it that much, that when the tree rejected it for some reason, I wired another new shoot to take it's approximate place. Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsai - good for you! I guess I like more symmetry in my plants! 😃
@JohnThurlbeck a twist of assymetry is usually what makes a tree stand out. Cheers John!
@@ArkefthosBonsai - I think you are right and I now need to embrace that thinking in my future bonsai designs! Thanks for that helpful lesson and have a great week ahead! 😁👍

You're welcome! Cheers!
Nice videos, I have enjoyed watching them. I am working with a few coast redwoods and Japanese black pines. One of my coast redwoods is a 6 foot nursery stock. I am currently air layering it, in hopes of having two trees to work with.
Very easy to air layer, as long as it does not dry out. I have two of them in the ground for bonsai (other than the 3 I have for landscape) and they have become beasts. I want to do something like what you are doing. Next spring for that. Thank you and good luck with your sequoias!
That is crazy. Great lesson as usual. Love your artistic work and thoughts, gonna follow this with keen eyes, Was that a wild tortoise? 👊👊
Thanks man! Yes it is wild, I have more than 10 this year working all day through the garden eating sedums, my melon and watermelon leaves, maple leaves etc. I usually had 4 or 5 but this year they exploded. Love them! Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsai they are so cool I love it 👊👊
How is the tree today? I hope it has survived that root work. I don't think that I would have been that brave to bare-root an older pine like this.
The tree is fine! Not all pine species have the same resilience. This trunk is Pinus nigra, they are just different, better in surviving! The thunbergii grafts which were further ahead in spring took a big hit from the root work and stopped growing for 2 months. By then the nigra buds had started a slow elongation. They now have needles popping up and they set new buds for next year which are looking very strong. It was in full sun up until yesterday when I moved it in half sun until September. I'm going to show the tree in the upcoming updates video. But this repotting is so necessary for a tree to become a bonsai. It's unavoidable. Cheers!
@@ArkefthosBonsai Thanks! That's great, I'm glad it worked out.
@erichraudebaugh you have no idea how glad I am! Ha ha ha
Awesome video, are you planning on doing a full garden tour video? I'd love to see it!

Thanks a lot for sharing this video and your expertise! It was really helpful and inspiring. Quick question: what kind of healing paste do you use?
Thank you Mark! It's an Italian I find easily here in Greece. You can search for it on Google with 'Zapi Fitobalsam" . It's a grafting and healing paste. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your works. great and very informative video. I want to ask some thing. Your graftting material is not center of the main trunk so the branch grows edge of the trunk. will it be a problem in the future? Thanks
Excellent question! No, it won't be. As the trees thicken, everything becomes fused more and more naturally and the rough pine bark will hide all the scars. In 4 - 5 years, this will look like a natural change in direction with a bit of twist as well. Cheers!
You cut your hair!? Great video. Very informative as always. Even though you have so many trees, having all that mountain side would be so enticing for yamadori adventures.
Yes, hair is gone Samuel! Too hot here for long hair.... Actually, digging out trees from the wild, especially a natura 2000 protected forest like the one that starts above the house, is prohibited in Greece and I totally agree and respect this. But still, I've got whatever I've planted in the ground since 2010, plus whatever tree has popped out naturally in the garden as yamadori.... Cheers mate!
I respect it as well. Look forward to the next one.

Is this the pine that you lost some time later? That was a shame if it was as it was a lovely tree!😥

Glad you approve Roberto! I truly appreciate it!
Thank you for addressing the cutting of the donor material as being unnecessary and possibly risky. I said the same idea in my video on thread grafting Japanese maples. I agree fully, that there is much more risk of damage or at minimum slowing down the growing shoot, which in turn will cause a slower healing process. My thread graft has quickly thickened in half a growing season to be larger than some of the preexisting branches. Bravo! 👏🏽
Definitely unnecessary for thread grafting as well! I'll check the video, I must have missed it. Have a great Sunday!
